Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) is Emmerdale’s prime example of ‘your life can change in a moment’.

One day, you’re raising your baby and living the life you dreamed of with your husband and the next, you learn your grandma was raped by your husbands workplace bully and accidentally kill her.

Sarah already knew Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) was a vicious, vindictive piece of work after having to watch her husband Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) have his confidence ground to dust at her hands when she took an dislike to the poor boy and decided to make his life as unbearable as humanly possible.

What she didn’t know, though, is that Todd then turned her focus to her grandma, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), upon learning that Leyla, the baby she was carrying that was supposedly the result of an implanted embryo belonging to Sarah and Jacob, was in fact the product of a one night stand between Charity and Ross Barton (Michael Parr).

A vicious blackmail campaign ensued, in which Todd tried to extort as much cash as possible from Charity, but when she finally drove her to breaking point, with Charity daring Todd to expose the truth, she committed her most sickening act yet and raped a drunken and vulnerable Charity.

Charity’s mental health utterly plummeted in the aftermath of the assault, and she was forced to pretend she was suffering with post natal depression, leaving Sarah riddled with guilt, as she tried to keep her rape a secret.

Failing to find solace in a support group and with the CPS unwilling to press charges against Todd, Charity was hit with blow after blow before finding comfort in the words of then-stranger Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy).

Despite the case against Todd falling apart, Charity began to rebuild herself, and was successfully recovering from the vile trauma she’d been subjected to, until Todd reared her head once again, and a final showdown was set in motion.

Caught on the back foot, Charity began to wither under Todd’s cruel jibes and vicious rhetoric, which played into every fear and doubt she held about herself following the rape, but Todd had sorely underestimated Charity’s inner strength and soon enough, she’d reclaimed her power from the heinous villain…

…Enter Sarah.

Overhearing the ordeal her grandma had been subjected to and angered by further vitriol spat by Todd, she shoved the demon doctor, causing her to smash her head on a table and fall to the floor, dead…

…Enter Serena.

Serena helped them come up with a convincing story to tell the police, but as they descend on the village, it becomes painfully evident that life will never be the same for Charity or Sarah ever again.
