Donald Trump will announce a “major trade deal” between America and the UK later today, according to reports.

The New York Times said progress had been made on an agreement that would see US import tariffs on British steel and cars being cut.

Downing Street sources did not deny the story when contacted by HuffPost UK this morning.

If confirmed, it would be a huge boost for Keir Starmer’s government.

Posting on Truth Social last night, Trump said: “Big News Conference tomorrow morning at 10:00 A.M [2pm UK time]., The Oval Office, concerning a MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY. THE FIRST OF MANY!!!”

Asked yesterday about reports that the UK was “offering various trade concessions” in areas like cars and steel in order to get a deal over the line, Trump said: “I hope so. They do want to make a deal very badly.

“The United Kingdom, like every other country, they want to go shopping in the United States of America.”
