Warning: This article contains spoilers from tonight’s episode of Emmerdale, which can be viewed online right now on ITV X.

I never thought there was a chance that Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) wouldn’t survive this explosive week of Emmerdale. Shows what I know.

When Emmerdale bosses first teased that at least one person would not survive Joe Tate’s wedding from hell, it never even occurred to me that the unlucky casualty would be the nefarious Home Farm trust fund baby himself.

After all, Joe Tate is the villain. His greedy ambitions to own half the village have destroyed the lives of some of our most beloved Dales Dwellers. Surely the best revenge is to have him survive and suffer?

That’s certainly the plan for Caleb Miligan (William Ash) and Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly), who concocted a grand, elaborate revenge to break their ruthless business rival’s heart on the happiest day of his life…by persuading his blushing bride-to-be Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) to jilt him at the altar.

This was, surprisingly, easily done. The opportunity was ready made. When Dawn’s ex Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) was mysteriously attacked from behind and left with a bleed on the brain, Dawn didn’t take much persuading to believe Joe was behind it – especial he learned of the pair’s almost-kiss.

Caleb worked on Billy and planted a few seeds in his mind, who convinced Dawn in turn. All it took from there was supplying both Billy and Dawn fake passports so they could flee the country with their kids…

… and Joe’s unborn child.

Like most soap weddings, things did not go according to plan.

First of all, Dawn’s attempt to jilt Joe was thwarted when Graham Foster, the Alfred to the Terrible Tate’s evil Bruce Wayne (Andrew Scarborough) caught her in the act. She knocked him out with a shovel and stashed him in the stables… but not before his words made her doubt Billy’s story. How could Billy know for sure that Joe attacked him when he was jumped from behind?

Meanwhile, Joe was lording it over the villagers in the Woolpack and toasting to ‘new beginnings.’ Despite Ruby’s pleas for Caleb to keep his powder dry and stay quiet, seeing his arch rival so smug was too much to bare. Especially after a sickly Joe had once employed dodgy surgeon Doctor Crowley to illegally perform a kidney transplant on Caleb without his knowledge.

This led to Caleb finally snapping and revealing his materpiece revenge to Joe, how he’d destroyed his wedding. ‘You may have ripped out my kidney’ he told him. ‘But I ripped out your heart.’

Ouch.

With Dawn nowhere to be found, Joe came to the devastating conclusion that his bride had betrayed him. Hitting the booze hard, he trashed the Marquis. However, at the last minute, Dawn arrived, having realised that Billy had been lying all this time and she’d trusted the wrong man. She begged Joe’s forgiveness and, heart in her mouth, asked him if he would still marry her.

Before Joe could answer,Jimmy King’s (Nick Miles) car came ploughing into the marquis, causing absolute devastation.

For months, the death of the last surviving member of Emmerdale’s infamous King family has been on the cards. Sadly, this episode confirmed that grim prediction, as Jimmy died amidst the wreckage of his car in the arms of his sobbing wife Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler.)

However, the grim reaper wasn’t finished with Emmerdale yet.

Since Olivia Bromley revealed that she’d be bowing out from her role as Dawn Taylor back in March, she seems a prime candidate to die. That’s what viewers will be thinking when they watch tonight’s episode, as she lies trapped with Joe under the wreckage.

Because all that matters in that moment is the safety of Dawn and their unborn baby, Joe finds the strength to forgive her for thinking the worst of him. She manages to free herself, but refuses to leave without Joe.

However, Joe makes it clear that if Dawn ever truly loved him, she will get herself and their baby to safety. Heartbreaking, Dawn is forced to leave Joe trapped under some fallen lighting.

Suddenly, Kim Tate (Claire King) arrives with Graham, who has escaped from the Stable. Realising that Joe is trapped inside, Graham rushes in to save his master and protege…

… while inside the tent, the leaking petrol from Jimmy’s car ignites some exposed wiring…

… and the entire Marquis goes up in a fiery ball of blame… with Joe inside, as a devastated Dawn scream his name.

Did we just witness the shocking death of Joe Tate? We can’t reveal the answer just yet. All I can say is… keep watching. You won’t believe what happens next.
