Interestingly, the mystery in question arguably stopped being quite so compelling since Chris Chibnall's divisive Timeless Child storyline, but it is still one of the biggest enigmas that remains at the heart of Doctor Who canon. An answer isn't provided in "The Well," but the secret is used to demonstrate the power of the returning monster from 2008's "Midnight" episode.
