When Assistant District Attorney Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor) rose through the ranks at the Port Charles District Attorney’s office on General Hospital, her eyes were firmly on the prize — to bring down local mob kingpin Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). She pursued him ruthlessly, going after his close associates like Mayor Laura Collins (Genie Francis) and Police Commissioner Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), determined to find corruption. But somewhere along the way, she began to see the dimpled don in the same way many have before her — as a flawed but fascinating man who dabbles in a world that is not as black and white as she’d originally thought, but rather one filled with shades of gray.
Sparks Flying?
Soap Opera Digest polled fans to ask if the cat-and-mouse games that Sonny and Justine have been indulging in are showing potential for a romantic future for the woman who loves the law and the man who has a penchant for breaking it. The results showed the vote was almost split down the middle, as 45% were against the two pursuing any sparks they might be feeling.
For longtime viewers, the Sonny-Justine dynamic is similar to ones they’ve seen from Sonny in the past. He enjoys sparring with smart lady lawyers — if he didn’t, his daughter Kristina (Kate Mansi) wouldn’t exist! Sonny and Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), Kristina’s mother, went toe-to-toe quite often when she was his lawyer of record back in the day, leading to the passionate “Sexis” one-night stand that resulted in Alexis’s pregnancy. In recent years, he even had a fling with Martina, the lawyer representing Carly (Laura Wright) in her divorce from Sonny!
Perhaps those who voted against Sonny and Justine getting romantic are not seeing the chemistry — or perhaps they’re holding onto hope that Sonny will instead reunite with one of his ex-wives, Carly or Nina (Cynthia Watros).
But a slightly larger group of viewers who answered the poll, representing 55% of the respondents, indicated that they are completely on board with watching Sonny and Justine fall for each other. He hasn’t had any romantic love in his life since his most recent marriage, to Nina, crumbled and ended in divorce in the spring of 2024 — eons in soap time! Working in Justine’s favor is that she has proven she can more than hold her own with Sonny and would likely hold his feet to the fire if he and when needed it. Plus, the time she has spent with Sonny while he’s in the company of his irresistibly adorable youngest daughter, Donna, has shown Justine not only that he’s a genuinely devoted dad (and that he can cook!) — and when she was forced to hide when Congressman Drew Cain stopped by Corinthos’s home to try to blackmail him, it opened her eyes to the fact that the power dynamics in Port Charles weren’t as simple as they seemed.
Will the grudging respect Sonny and Justine have developed for one another blossom into more? Only time will tell!
