Disney+ is raising prices again – but only in the US

Disney+ has brought in another price rise, this time for US subscribers only.

The popular app will rise alongside its sister service, Hulu, in what Variety reports is the fourth such rise in as many years. Disney+ Premium and Hulu Premium ad-free plans are both increasing, going from $18.99 (£14.36) to $21.49 (£16.25) per month, a 13 per cent rise. A “bundle” package of the two is comparatively cheaper, rising from $19.99 (£15.11) to $21.99 (£16.29) per month.

Ad-supported plans are also rising, with Disney+ and Hulu’s ad tiers rising from $11.99 (£9.07) to $12.49 (£9.44) per month, although the bundled version of the services has stayed at $12.99 (£9.82) per month. The new prices were in place as of Wednesday (September 23) for new subscribers, which existing subscribers will see the rise in their next monthly bill.

The rapid rise in subscription costs for streaming services has been repeated criticised by customers. In March, Netflix received backlash for raising their price for their US viewers for the second time in just over a year.

The streaming service is the most popular in the world, with over 325million subscribers worldwide. It has enjoyed particular success in the past year with releases such as KPop Demon Hunters (its most watched film of all time), the final season of Strangers Things, WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) streaming rights, and a recent collaboration with the reuniting BTS.

However, viewers have consistently questioned the need for such increases, with an Italian court ruling that they were illegal during a hearing held in April.
