Not many may have seen this coming. The defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, were trailing 0-2 in the series against the Maple Leafs at one point in time. However, it has been a quick turnaround for them, winning a hat trick of games to take the lead for the first time this series. Yesterday, they defeated the Maple Leafs by a huge margin of 6-1 to have one foot in the semifinals of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. While there was joy in the Panthers’ camp, the Maple Leafs were left disappointed by the humbling defeat. As a result, their captain, Auston Matthews, had a message for the fans.

After the game, Matthews was involved in an interview where he reflected on the disappointing Game 5 against the Panthers. During the interview, he explained where his team went wrong, along with issuing an apology to the Maple Leafs’ fans as they were crushed by the Panthers. In a grim message to the fans, Matthews revealed, “I mean, I don’t think we gave them uh much reason to stick around. ” The message came after a number of Maple Leafs fans were spotted leaving the arena even before the final whistle blew.

The Panthers began the game on the front foot and dominated right from the word go. They took the lead at 14:38, with Aaron Ekblad providing the finishing touch. Auston Matthews was involved in the build-up to that goal, losing the puck to Aleksander Barkov as the Panthers got the much-deserved lead. Subsequently, the Panthers literally sealed the game in the second period, where they scored three goals, while the Maple Leafs were still having difficulties in finding the finishing touch.

With this, the Panthers are just a win away from making it to the last four of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Not only Auston Matthews but also several other Maple Leafs stars, like Mitch Marner, who stated that they “made some sloppy play… I don’t think anyone’s happy about it… it wasn’t close to good enough” while explaining his opinion of their performance, reflecting how apologetic all of them were for their lackadaisical display in a crucial game. Now, while the Panthers dominated the entire game, the Maple Leafs’ coach, Craig Berube, explained where the game was actually won and lost.

Beyond Auston Matthews’ performance, Maple Leafs’ coach reflects on a tough loss

Ahead of Game 5, the Maple Leafs’ coach, Berube, was confident about his team’s turnaround after losing two back-to-back matches. Although his team had shown aggression and hunger in the previous game, it was missing in Game 5, right from the word go. It was something that Berube pointed out after the game as his team suffered a disappointing loss.

During the post-game interview, Berube revealed, “First period they outskated us really. They had the puck, won the races. We played slow. They were fast, honest, hungrier. That’s the first period and that sets the tone for the game. It’s hard to explain it, we all have to be better, myself included. You can’t start the game that way.”

Nonetheless, Berube was confident about his team’s comeback chances. The Maple Leafs have to win the remaining two games if they are to qualify for the semifinals. However, for that, the onus lies on stars like Matthews, who will have to lead his team from the front and ensure that they start well, as Berube rightly pointed out.
