The Cleveland Browns have been a surprising team in the 2025 NFL Draft. First, they trade the No. 2 pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars, opting not to select Travis Hunter. Then, they passed on Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders. Instead, they picked Dillon Gabriel with the 94th pick. In total, five picks—none of them for Shedeur. The choice of Gabriel is also interesting since he was nowhere in the first three rounds in the mock drafts. Before this pick, their QB room looked like a mess. They only have Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Deshaun Watson, with one struggling with age and the other recovering from an Achilles injury. Can Gabriel, the wild card entry and fifth quarterback off the board, perform well for the Browns? His girlfriend got an answer.
Gabriel’s fiancée, Zo Caswell, has always been an unwavering source of support for her man throughout the bittersweet transition from college to pro. The middle school sweetheart frequently ignites the internet with their matching outfits during romantic candlelight dinners or cozy travel photos. But it’s not just the romance in their story. Caswell notably attended all of the former Ducks’ QB’s games. Now, as the Browns become her new go-to stadium and watch-out team among all the 32, the lady stepped up to assure Coach Kevin Stefanski and the team that they are not running at a loss in their QB room.
Caswell, alongside the wide fanbase of Gabriel, including his family and friends, felt a butterfly in her stomach when she heard Dillon’s name on Friday night. Not surprisingly, her overwhelming emotion flooded her IG story feed with a bunch of Dillon Gabriel’s posts. She wrote in the caption, ‘Ohio got a good one, so proud,’ in one of those Gabriel shout-out posts.
She shared a video where the whole family rewatched the clip of the watershed moment when Gabriel finally heard his name, and immediately, they all jumped out of their seats with loud and wide laughter. However, the next moment was truly remarkable. Caswell put a flower garland on Gabriel’s neck, and they hugged each other in a priceless moment of glee. But the celebration didn’t even stop there. The Browns’ newly acquired quarterback uncorked a bottle of champagne outside their residence, causing his fans to burst into laughter.
All the memories and moments speak volumes about how much of a pleasant surprise his draft experience was for the entire family. But the decision left the internet split. While some embraced the move on a good, positive note, others became minutely critical. Despite Caswell’s message, the recurring question that pops into their head is: Can Gabriel get well with the Browns?
Why did the Browns take a chance with an underrated QB?
Dillon Gabriel, at pick 94, was not on our typical Bingo card. Especially, Gabriel going ahead of Shedeur seemed surprising. However, given the constant reevaluation of the talent, skills, and personality of the NFL scouts, GMs, and coaches, calling it a fluke for the 24-year-old would not be right. Kevin Stefanski found the 5 ft 11 an epic fit for their offense; that’s a no-brainer. But exactly what qualities of the Ducks’ crown jewel stand out to the $5.15 billion team?
“Decorated college career, very accurate, very poised, throws with the anticipation, good mobility,” said Browns GM Andrew Berry. “We just thought he had a really well-rounded game. The biggest negative that you say about him is that he doesn’t have the ideal height. But that’s not something that we felt like showing up in his game.”
Despite his height, he has many other advantages. Gabriel played at three programs throughout his storied college career before dishing out his best at Oregon in 2024. He spent just one year in Eugene, but it was marked by an unprecedented achievement. The signal-caller capped off his remarkable season, completing 72.9 percent of passes for 3,857 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Gabriel suited up for 64 total college games across a six-year college career and started 63 of them. The stat marked him as the most experienced QB in FBS history. That came off as a hard-to-bypass trait for Stefanski and the team. His interactions with the team worked as a perfect icing on the cake.
“We spent a lot of time with Dillon throughout this process,” Browns General Manager Andrew Berry said. “We brought him in right after the combine and did the private visit and workouts out in Eugene. Decorated college career, and very accurate and very poised. We just thought he had a really well-rounded game.”
Gabriel is set to face an intense QB competition. It will be interesting to see how this marriage pans out down the road.
