Destiny 2 unvaulting update: It sure sounds like the original Destiny is finally coming to PC

Bungie shocked the world (or at least, it shocked the world's Destiny fans) when it un-canceled Destiny 2 in September, saying the game "is foundational to Bungie’s futuure" and promising to restore vaulted content and "return Destiny to its original promise." In a community update shared today, the studio revealed more about that process, and one standout point is that it sure sounds like the original Destiny is finally coming to PC.

The update begins with a broad overview of what led up to the unvaulting announcement and what's happened since, a broad roadmap that breaks down into three sections—First Pass, Stretch Goals, and stuff that's probably not going to happen "for technical and/or strategic reasons"—and a progress bar:

It's worth noting up front that while things have been happening fairly quickly so far, the actual Great Unvaultening is still a long way off. The pre-production process is now underway and expected to run until January or February of 2027, and "from that point we expect full production will be about 12 months to fully complete the porting process," Bungie head of product Josh Deane said. "It’s a lot of content."

Deane then touched on what comes after that, referencing his comment in September that Bungie is "not done with Destiny." With caveats that "some things are subject to change in success or failure," he said that Bungie is "marching forward with a phased plan for Destiny’s future that celebrates our legacy and propels us into a new, far green country." To that end, he cited three "anchors" for players to watch for:

Destiny 2 “Celebration’’ [Expect a new February Progress bar]

We believe we need to have a celebration in Destiny 2, beyond Monument of Triumph, for the community that provides new updates for you all to enjoy. More details to come!

Destiny ‘Legacy’ [Expect a new February Progress bar]

Our epic journey started over a decade ago, and the whole experience needs to be served to you all where you play today. Expect more information when we come back to you all early next year.

Launch Ventrilo Message: ‘We’re back’

The second point is the one that caught our interest. Destiny 2 was (and, some PC Gamer folks would argue, still is) huge on PC, but the original game never came our way: More than a decade after it launched, it remains exclusive to consoles.

Proclaiming that "the whole experience needs to be served to you all where you play today" pretty strongly suggests to me that's going to change, and that's a big deal: Destiny 2's Final Shape expansion brought an end to the 10-year Light and Darkness saga in 2024, but a lot of us never got to experience how it actually started, and I'd bet that having the opportunity to do so would bring a lot of lapsed players (myself included) back to see what's cooking.

Deane concluded by saying that this is a major undertaking and not one that will be finished quickly. "It’s important to know that this is a true reset moment for Bungie, Marathon, and Destiny. We also know time isn’t our friend; we’re playing from behind with the cards we have and I’m sure we’ll have to take more punches and make some hard decisions along the way," he said.

"Knowing we are early in incubating our future and actively working on projects to bridge us to that new home, don’t expect us to make a Destiny announcement at the TGA’s this year, or to randomly drop a logo that sets the world on fire right away.

"We get there when we get there."
