In New York City—the mecca of baseball—every step onto the diamond is a chance for a legend to prove why he’s one. When the New York Yankees’ legend Derek Jeter had his chance, he established himself as a symbol of everything pure about baseball. He has five World Series titles, legendary clutch moments, and a post-retirement business empire to his name. So naturally, when a name from the cross-town rivals is drawn into comparisons with someone like Jeter, it’s not surprising that the Yanks decided to backfire.
Well, the rival team across the town is obviously the New York Mets. But any guess from which player is being compared to the Captain Clutch? Okay, okay… without making any more suspense, it’s shortstop Francisco Lindor. Umm.. interesting! Do you remember Lindor achieving the 50.8 WAR record recently? Well, it so happens to have surpassed Jeter’s 50-WAR threshold. That’s indeed a great achievement for Lindor and the Mets. However, the Yankees fans weren’t happy about it. Of course, for obvious reasons.
Now, some time later, when the Mets went up against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, the Jeter-Lindor comparisons were drawn again. More than the Yankees’ 6-2 win, Lindor’s style of play has topped the headlines. The post quickly went viral on social media, where Lindor was captured attempting Jeter’s signature play. Posted by SNY on X, Brandon Nimmo, who was mic’d up for the Yankees-Mets matchup, cheers for Lindor as he tried to throw out DJ LeMahieu. Nimmo said, “He (Lindor) almost did a Jeter right in Jeter’s old spot!”
Let’s just say Nimmo has ignited the comparison drama once again. The worst-case scenario would have been if he hadn’t added ‘almost’ in his statement. ‘Cause, you know, the Yankees fans don’t take such comparisons well.
Lindor is doing exceptionally well this season. And the comparisons are also correct STATISTICALLY, even if it isn’t in the eyes of Yanks. However, it all comes down to whether Lindor can deliver under the postseason spotlight. After all, for nearly two decades Jeter has won hearts for his playoff performance.
Fans troll Francisco Lindor for attempting to imitate Derek Jeter’s iconic style of play
When it comes to Jeter, Yankees fans don’t take it very well. Just when Nimmo cheered for Lindor by calling his style of play “Jeter’s,” the Yankees’ fans began trolling him.
The Subway series was held at Yankee Stadium. So the idea of Lindor, a Mets player, attempting to imitate Jeter’s style or play—intentionally or unintentionally—didn’t sit well with the Yankees’ nation. “Bro thought he could really pull that off in our home turf”. The local fans took a shot at Lindor’s audacity to do so. After all, it’s the 14-time All-Star and the Hall of Famer, Jeter.
Then, one nonchalantly stated, “he’ll never get it like Jeter. A for the effort, tho.” Well, he is a member of baseball’s exclusive 3,000-hit club; the former Yankees player is hyped for a reason. So, while Lindor is doing well, fans believe he can never really be like Jeter, no matter what.
Some mean sarcastic jabs: “NOT EVEN CLOSE TO A HALL OF FAME SHORTSTOP LIKE JETER!!!!” We can almost hear the tone of his voice with this comment. Certainly, fans are not ready to believe that anybody can be a better shortstop than Jeter. It’s not about Lindor; it’s just the kind of legacy he has given to the Yankees.
When the comments sections on all the social media platforms were flooded with Jeter-Lindor comparisons, some were simply done: “Stop with the comparison, please .” Each player has their own charm, so, well, it’s fair to really stop the comparisons. Jeter was the face of the Yankees’ late-90s dynasty. So, the bar for comparison with Lindor isn’t fair anyway.
One took it to heart and stated, “Jeter wasn’t an ‘almost’ kind of player.” This stems from when Nimmo said that Lindor ‘almost’ pulled off a Jeter-like move. So, the idea that he could be a part of a statement that ‘almost’ compared him with the cross-town rivals didn’t sit well with the Yankees Nation.
The long-time baseball fans who have witnessed Jeter’s era just cannot see him being compared to anybody. Lindor is playing remarkably well. However, if any such comparison surfaces anytime soon, fans are again going to blow up the internet.
