Denzel Washington was involved in a heated altercation with a photographer on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2025.

The incident occurred at the premiere of Highest 2 Lowest, directed by Spike Lee and starring Washington and A$AP Rocky. According to video footage, Washington confronted a photographer who appeared to grab his arm while he was speaking with Lee. Washington pointed his finger at the man and repeatedly shouted, “Stop!”

As Washington turned to walk away, the photographer again grabbed his arm. In response, the actor forcefully pulled away and continued shouting, “Stop it! Stop!” Video captured other photographers laughing during the exchange. Washington’s representatives have not released a comment on the matter.

Shortly after the incident, Washington received a surprise honorary Palme d’Or award before the screening of the film. Cannes Film Festival chief Thierry Frémaux addressed the audience, saying, “It’s a very special day. Denzel, because you are here, we want to make something special for you … it’s a kind of way for us to tell you our adoration, what you have done in cinema” (via Deadline.)

Spike Lee, who directed Highest 2 Lowest, presented the award, saying, “This is my brother right here. I love him. I’m glad you’re here where all the people love you too.” Washington, visibly moved, responded, “This is a total surprise for me, so I’m a little emotional. Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low, based on the novel King’s Ransom. The film is set to release in theaters on August 22 and stream on Apple TV+ in September.
