Dylan Summers, the independent wrestling veteran known globally as the Necro Butcher, has signed a WWE Legends contract. The agreement, often referred to as a nostalgia deal, marks a rare alignment between the world’s largest wrestling promotion and a performer who built a career almost exclusively on the “deathmatch” fringes of the industry.
The signing is particularly notable as Summers has never worked for WWE in any capacity during his decades-long career. Known as the “King of the Deathmatch,” his path to a corporate contract at age 53 follows a career defined by high-impact brutality in promotions such as IWA Mid-South, Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW), and Ring of Honor. According to reports, WWE President Nick Khan was the primary executive behind the deal, continuing a recent trend of securing legacy rights for significant “outsider” figures in wrestling history.
After decades on the independent circuit, joins the Legends roster.
The timing of the offer was serendipitous for Summers. He reportedly received the contract proposal in early October 2026, just one day after he had walked away from his regular non-wrestling day job. Despite the new partnership with WWE, Summers has clarified that the agreement will not interfere with his existing commitments. He has stated he will not cancel any previously scheduled independent wrestling dates or alter the violent style that defined his career.
Interest in Summers’ legacy saw a significant boost following a recent episode of the documentary series Dark Side of the Ring. The episode highlighted his 2005 encounter with Samoa Joe, a match widely regarded as one of the most physical “shoot-style” bouts in independent history. Beyond the ring, Summers also gained mainstream recognition for his appearance in the 2008 Academy Award-nominated film The Wrestler, where he played himself in a choreographed but realistic hardcore match against Mickey Rourke’s character.
His signing also serves as a milestone in his personal recovery. Summers is a survivor of Hodgkin lymphoma, having been diagnosed with the disease in July 2020. After undergoing treatment, he was declared cancer-free in February 2021 and eventually returned to the ring.
While WWE Legends contracts typically cover merchandise rights, such as action figures, video game appearances, and archival footage use, specific projects for the Necro Butcher have not yet been announced. Fans have already begun speculating on his potential inclusion in future installments of the WWE 2K video game franchise or the Mattel WWE Elite action figure line, which frequently features “Legends” roster members.
