A Telling Lie: Robert Scott Wilson plays Alex’s relief over Joy saying she’s not pregnant as Stephanie (Abigail Klein) stands by him.

As a big fan of the Alex and Stephanie pairing on Days of Our Lives, Robert Scott Wilson (Alex) admits he was “nervous” and “scared” when he initially learned about the surprise twist of Joy’s surprise pregnancy, concerned about the impact it would have on his character’s recent romantic reunion with Stephanie.

Baby Makes Three?

“It was more the shock of, ‘What’s going to happen now?’ ” explains Wilson. “Because things were just starting to kick off with Stephanie again. That’s where Alex’s heart really rose, and Stephanie is kind of Alex’s one true pairing.”

As such, Wilson would have liked to have seen Alex “be a little bit more [true to] the person that he really loves,” he says. “But then I was like, ‘Look, this is what happened and now we’ve just got to deal with it.’ ” And, he allows, “I think it makes for good story. It makes for some good drama. And Alex did care for Joy. I know the fans actually really took a liking to Joy and Alex, so it worked out.”

Wilson vividly recalls the scenes where Stephanie broke the news to Alex that Joy could be carrying his child. “It was a nightmare for Alex. A nightmare,” emphasizes the actor. “But I was glad to see Stephanie handle it the way she did and as well as she did. It made it a little easier for Alex, and he and Stephanie really teamed up to figure things out together.”

Stephanie being such a calming and rational influence on Alex is one of the reasons Wilson sees the characters as such a good match for one another. “Stephanie has always been able to ground Alex and just make him find himself as a whole,” says Wilson. “She makes him a better man despite these very dramatic situations. She’s always been in his corner, which is really, really great.”

The actor certainly appreciates the drama that Alex’s dalliance with Joy injected into what was building between Alex and Stephanie. “I had done the couple thing for so long with Ben and Ciara,” he points out, referring to his previous DAYS role as Ben Weston and the super-popular “Cin” pairing. “So I knew what that was like, and we [he and leading lady Victoria Konefal, who played Ciara] definitely did as much as we possibly could with the two of them for years. So, it was nice having something a little different to do, something with a little bit more drama, and a little bit of a different story to tell.”

However, Wilson isn’t disappointed that Alex seems to have abandoned his playboy ways and is instead choosing to focus on one woman. “I think it is ultimately better to be with one person and to build that story,” muses Wilson. “I mean, obviously this is Salem, and you build it to break it anyway. But to have somebody and to fight for true love is always the best thing to do no matter who I’m playing or what [the story] is. Being able to fight for the person you love is very important.”

After all, the angst that a tortured couple goes through as they fight to get together or reconcile has been the crux of daytime dramas for decades. And Wilson understands the value of that tried-and-true process to soap opera storytelling. “It’s all about the struggle,” he maintains. “And there’s beauty in the struggle.”
