High on momentum and in excellent form, Scottie Scheffler stepped onto the Colonial Country Club looking for another win. This was his 3rd event in 4 weeks. He had already won the last two, with the 2025 PGA Championship being the more prestigious of them. With 3 more events to go before the next major, the world no. 1 had all the time in the world to catch a break. Instead, he chose to play. And that might have cost him a bit more than the few million he lost by finishing 4th.

No, we’re not talking about momentum. Although it would have been great to go to Ohio to defend the Memorial Tournament after two wins in a row. However, the bigger risk was a possible injury. And that’s exactly what Scheffler faced in the second round of the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge. A video shared by Beat The Odds Sports showed a wayward follow-up to a drive that ended up with him holding his back. Speculation arose that Scheffler might have hurt his back as he was caught ‘wincing in pain’ after completing the tee shot. In an interview a few hours later, Scheffler admitted some fatigue, “I would say mentally I am a bit tired”. This raised further concerns of Mr. Inevitable being under distress.

Now that the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge is finally over and Scheffler hasn’t made it three wins in a row, he reflected on everything that occurred throughout the week. In a post-round interview, he was asked about his thoughts on what occurred this week. He replied, “I had a really good weekend. I did some good stuff. I feel like I could have scored a little better today. Overall, it was a really challenging day. I think Friday probably hurt me in terms of winning this tournament, but overall, three of the four days I played what I felt was pretty solid. Just had one off day, but outside of that, I did some good things this week as well.”

Despite a strong show for most of the tournament, the 1-over par in the second round hindered Scheffler’s chances of winning a third consecutive title. He followed that up with a 6-under in the penultimate round. But that wasn’t nearly enough to push him to the top of the table, which was led by Ben Griffin and Matti Schmid. In the end, Scheffler was tied with Tommy Fleetwood for the 4th spot, 4 strokes shy of the champion, Griffin.

This raised questions about what to expect from Scheffler going into the Memorial Tournament title defence. A reporter asked, “How do you save up for next week, three weeks in a row, having won that first week? What do you do going into next week to try to conserve energy?” A valid question, considering this would be the 4th event for Scottie Scheffler in May 2025. Yet, it was an important one as the upcoming Signature event holds a prestigious status on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler replied, “Well, this week was a bit lighter in terms of preparation. I didn’t do anything Monday and Tuesday. Tomorrow I’ll take the day.” Cool as a cucumber, he seems to have it all laid out perfectly. Or at least that’s what it seems like, judging by his response. The loss in Pennsylvania doesn’t seem to be playing on his mind as he is focused on retaining the Memorial Tournament title. Well, with his home 1,400 miles away, we can assume he might have already boarded the plane as he takes a day off from golf. He can’t afford to waste any time as he will need to travel again, more than 1,000 miles, for his title defence at the Muirfield Village Golf Club a couple of days later.

Speaking of the title defence, what is at stake for Scottie Scheffler in the upcoming Signature event?

Scottie Scheffler is looking to make history in Ohio

After everything that he achieved in 2024, Scottie Scheffler has been increasingly compared to Tiger Woods. The world No. 1’s amazing feats last season gave everyone a glimpse of the Woods-esque domination he can deliver. Considering his abilities and determination, it seems like Scheffler is chasing a few records set by the 82-time PGA Tour winner over his illustrious career.

Starting to prepare for a trip to the Muirfield Village Golf Club, he would have another one of Woods’s feats in mind as he defends his Memorial Tournament title. In the history of the prestigious event hosted by Jack Nicklaus, only one man has been able to win the Memorial Tournament consecutively. In fact, that same man actually won it three times in a row from 1999 to 2001. It’s no secret who we’re talking about here.

However, Mr. Inevitable has a shot to match that record and become the second golfer in 50 editions of the Memorial Tournament to win it two times in a row. Hence, it’s safe to assume that there is a lot more than a title defence and the big paycheck at stake for Scottie Scheffler as he takes a break from golf.
