Even among a fanbase as massive as Star Trek's, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't consider Data (Brent Spiner) one of the franchise's most magnificent characters. Trek loves a good archetype, and Data is Star Trek: The Next Generation's answer to Spock (Leonard Nimoy) — an outsider operating from a place of logic, both the go-to comedic relief and exceptionally, intimately heartfelt. He's a walking paradox on an earnest quest, and Spiner's extraordinary abilities tug at even the chilliest heartstrings. The Next Generation's staff never hesitates to utilize the sci-fi gift that is an android who yearns to feel. In Season 3, Episode 16, "The Offspring," written by René Echevarria and directed by cast member Jonathan Frakes, Data shocks his colleagues when he decides to become a parent. A poignant and character-driven highlight, the episode showcases how Data — charged with a newfound responsibility — is the series' heart.
