Dancing With the Stars' Val Chmerkovskiy reveals he was hospitalised for neck injury: 'I went through some stuff'

Professional dancer and Dancing With The Stars US champion Val Chmerkovskiy has revealed a recent health scare.

Chmerkovskiy revealed on Thursday that last year, he suffered a serious neck injury and shared pictures of himself at hospital at the time.

"This time last year I went through some stuff," the 37-year-old wrote in his post.

He left details of the injury under wraps, but could be seen in the images wearing a neck brace.

The dancer, who won the mirror ball trophy with Rumer Willis one year, also shared pictures of his neck X-ray, with what appears to be screws in his neck.

He also showed fans the scar on his neck from the surgery.

In March last year, he hinted at the neck injury in a post and wrote: "This last year I had a son and lost a grandfather. Felt better than ever and almost lost my ability to move."

He added in part of his post: "Life is hard, and the older you get the harder it becomes."

"One year later and doing better than ever. So glad ur okay 🙏," a follower commented underneath his post this week.

Val Chmerkovskiy

Chmerkovskiy is married to professional American dancer, Jenna Johnson.

His brother is dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Chmerkovskiy, who was born in Ukraine, moved to the U.S. with his family in the 1990s.

He first appeared on Dancing With the Stars US in 2006 and officially joined as a dance partner in 2011.

He won the glittering mirror ball trophy on the hit show a series of three times, once with Rumer Willis, Laurie Hernandez and Xochitl Gomez.

He told US Weekly after his win with Gomez last year that he looks forward to another season on DWTS.

"I would [return next season]. Listen, if they had me back, I'd love to be back. It's going to be a tough season to follow," he said.

About the win, he said: "It feels great. This one feels a little different. It's been seven years since I was able to be lucky enough to win and to win it with this young lady."

"Man, she carried us all season. She made me look great as a teacher [and] as a partner."
