Graham Greene’s agent, Michael Greene, confirmed the news, stating, “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” referencing Greene’s longtime agent who passed away in 2013 (via Deadline).
Greene was born on June 22, 1952, in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reserve. He graduated from the Centre for Indigenous Theatre Program in 1974 and began performing on stage in Canada and England during the 1970s. He made his television debut in 1979 on The Great Detective and his first film appearance in Running Brave (1983).
His career breakthrough came in 1990 when Kevin Costner cast him as Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves. The film earned 12 Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture. Greene received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Following that success, Greene appeared in more than 200 film and television projects. His films included Thunderheart (1992), Maverick (1994), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), and Molly’s Game (2017).
He also built a wide-ranging television career with regular or recurring roles in Northern Exposure, Lonesome Dove: The Series, Defiance, American Gods, Longmire, Wolf Lake, Marvel’s Echo, 1883, Tulsa King, and Reservation Dogs.
Greene received major honors across his career. He won a Grammy, several Gemini Awards, and a Canadian Screen Award. He also earned a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award.
