CSI Fan-Favorite Joins Blue Bloods Spin-off in Emotional New Role

CSI’s most iconic actress just booked her most personal role yet. Marg Helgenberger joins the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue in a guest role that adds a complicated family dynamic to the show’s second season.

CBS’s Boston Blue has cast CSI: Crime Scene Investigation veteran Marg Helgenberger in its second season as Gwen Silver. She plays the estranged mother of Maggie Lawson’s Sarah Silver. The network announced the casting on Wednesday, with season 2 premiering on Oct. 9.

The network describes Gwen as a “complex yet charming woman whose temperament is not unlike the climate of her Cape Cod home — unpredictable,” per Entertainment Weekly. She returns to Boston with “a very personal and emotional agenda” that catches Sarah off guard. CBS adds that “though Gwen loves her daughter more than anything, her arrival adds a complicated layer to the Silver family dynamic.”

Gwen’s arrival deepens the Silver family storylines that already drive much of the spinoff. Sarah currently navigates a thorny stepsister relationship with Sonequa Martin-Green’s detective Lena Silver. The new character brings yet another wrinkle to Sarah’s already overloaded family drama.

Helgenberger became a television staple in the early 1980s on ABC’s Ryan’s Hope. She starred in films like Bad Boys and Erin Brockovich and appeared on series including ER and Frasier. Audiences know her best for playing Catherine Willows across 13 seasons of CSI.

Helgenberger reflected on that role in a 2022 interview ahead of joining CSI: Vegas. “I had played Catherine Willows for so many years. It’s like a part of me,” she said. She added that “one of the reasons I left the original show is because I felt like it had become too much of my identity.”

Helgenberger also joins a growing list of new additions for season 2. Blue Bloods alum Will Estes will reunite with Donnie Wahlberg as Frank’s brother Jamie. The series also stars Ernie Hudson and Gloria Reuben as regulars.
