Crystal Lake is avoiding the Stranger Things trap, and it will be better for it.

After the release of the Crystal Lake trailer, many online sleuths theorized that the show would turn Jason Voorhees into a government project and “super soldier,” similar to how Stranger Things presented Eleven, due to the presence of a secret yellow door in the footage. Creator Brad Caleb Kane shot those rumors down in an interview with Deadline.

“I don’t want people watching, thinking that we’re doing some sort of Stranger Things, Eleven, government super soldier. It’s not that, it’s its own thing,” Kane said. “It’s grounded in more reality. It’s grounded in things that were going on in the 60s and 70s that sort of intersect with the theme of mistrusting our institutions.”

Jason Voorhees and Eleven are entirely different characters. Therefore, Kane is making the smart decision to avoid taking the hockey-mask killer down a Stranger Things-esque path.

Crystal Lake is avoiding the supernatural and grounding the show in reality

Stranger Things leans heavily into its sci-fi and supernatural elements. An entire world exists underneath Hawkins called the Upside Down, where otherworldly creatures reside. The popular Netflix series is also a government conspiracy show about how a shadow organization created super soldiers like Eleven.

Jason Voorhees eventually turns into a supernatural being in the Friday the 13th series progresses. However, that is not a storyline in Crystal Lake, and frankly, it shouldn’t be. Crystal Lake is an origin story for Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), the original villain in Friday the 13th. Pamela is not Jason. She is a mortal who faces real-life consequences. In other words, she can die.

Crystal Lake is more about Pamela than Jason, though the latter will make appearances throughout the Peacock show. The series covers Jason’s drowning and how Pamela handles the grief that comes with her son’s death, resulting in murderous consequences.

These themes of grief and murder are grounded in reality. Therefore, there is no place for Stranger Things’ supernatural elements in Crystal Lake.
