Cowboys Receive $52.7 Million News After Jerry Jones’ Son Announced Dak Prescott’s Contract Restructuring Plan

One good news for the Dallas Cowboys? Dak Prescott is now in a quite better condition but the sad thing is the Dallas Cowboys are not! The franchise signed the 31-year-old for a staggering 240 million dollars in 2024 and boom… injury happened. The star quarterback suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Since then, not only Prescott but the whole of Dallas fans and the team have been going through so many ups and downs. And as their season has ended with a shameful record, another big thing has hit the Cowboys.

As y’all know, Dak Prescott signed a four-year deal with the franchise which has an $80,000,000 signing bonus included along with an annual salary of $60,000,000. We all know how huge that is! As Prescott is injured and the guaranteed amount the franchise owes to him is $231,000,000, the highest cap hit of the season has hit the Cowboys in the back of its head.

Spotrac dropped a nuke in Dallas when the owner shared a post on X on Wednesday. The tweet said, “Dak Prescott holds a league-high $89.9M cap figure with the #Cowboys in 2025. Even if (when) Dallas processes a full salary conversion, the lowest his cap hit can be for the upcoming season is $52.7M.” Quite bad news for Jerry Jones. The owner may be (or should have been) aware of this.

And if that’s not enough, Prescott has to be paid a base salary of $47,750,000 for the current season. So, according to Spotrac, this salary amount for the 2024 season will carry a cap hit of $89,896,666 on the Cowboys. This is heartbreaking as well as important in terms of cap space. Do you know how much cap space will be available for the Cowboys, as the NFL is set to seal a $275 million bar on annual spending?

According to Sports Illustrated and Spotrac, the Cowboys will get a cap space of only 15.152 million dollars. And what do they have to do with this much amount? Signing other important players, taking important decisions for a good roster. That’s why the cap hit of 52.7 million dollars is worth more than that. Blackout! In comparison to this, the New England Patriots will have 126.13 million dollars of Cap hit. Great, right? They can sign free agents or sign a big deal with players like Tyreek Hill and others.

However, for the Cowboys, people are actually suggesting Dak come one step down and reorganize the remaining amount in order to get other top players in the franchise. But there is no update from Prescott’s end. Meanwhile, Jerry Jones‘ son has come up with a great idea regarding Prescott’s salary cap hit.

Stephen Jones’ restructuring plan for Dak Prescott’s cap hit & 2025 season

The Cowboys‘ owner Jerry Jones’ son had appeared on 105.3 The Fan. On the podcast, the host asked Stephen Jones about the boiling question in Dallas right now—Dak Prescott’s cap hit. His response to it was, “We reworked (Dak Prescott’s contract) every step of the way of his $40 million contract and we’ll be reworking it again throughout on his $60 million contract, in terms of pushing the payday out. A little bit of that’s our problem right now, is we’re not only paying for his current $60 million, we’re still paying for part of the $40 million contract that we pushed out.”

In addition to Stephen Jones’ plan, experts suggest that if the Cowboys rework the contract amount, they can bring up Jourdan Lewis and Osa Odighizuwa on the 53-men roster. But it’s not an easy task. Though Jones will put in efforts, the remaining cap will still be astronomical. Another option for the Cowboys would be to focus on the offensive line and coaches. But only after the franchise gets out of Prescott’s insanely big cap hit.

The postseason has started (offseasn for the Dallas team obviously), and soon the drafts will also begin in April 2025. The Cowboys need to pull up. One thing is clear: Dak Prescott is going through tough days for sure, but who is more suffering from his injury is the Dallas Cowboys.
