p>A court hearing in North Wales has revealed that 35-year-old Samantha Natalie Phythian was still alive when the van she was found in was set on fire. The discovery was made by emergency services on Gas Works Lane in Prestatyn late on the night of Sunday, October 4, 2026.
According to North Wales Police, officers and fire crews were called to the scene near a local retail park at approximately 11:30 PM. Phythian, a resident of Rhyl, was located inside the burning vehicle. A subsequent postmortem examination confirmed she was pregnant at the time of her death.
The legal proceedings are expected to continue through 2027 at Mold Crown Court.
Legal Proceedings and Murder Charge
Thomas Matthew Hammond Bell, 38, also of Rhyl, has been charged with murder in connection with Phythian’s death. During a hearing on October 9, Judge Geraint Walters stated that evidence indicates the victim was alive at the moment the fire was ignited. Bell has been remanded in custody following the court appearance.
The investigation has also led to the arrest of a second man. The 47-year-old suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and possession of drugs with the intent to supply. Authorities have not yet confirmed if the second man will face additional charges related to the homicide.
Timeline for Trial
The judicial process is expected to extend into next year. A plea and trial preparation hearing for Bell has been scheduled for November 2026. While the case is still in its early stages, the court has already set a provisional trial date for April 2027.
The area where the van was discovered, Gas Works Lane, remained a focus for forensic teams earlier this week as investigators continued to gather evidence from the scene and surrounding industrial area.
