Coronation Street’s #swarla, Carla Connor (Alison King) and Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) aren’t ever gonna have an easy time of it, are they?
They danced around each other for quite a while in the beginning; it was very much a case of ‘will they, won’t they?’. Even when they did finally get together, the spectre of Lisa’s dead ex-wife, Becky Swain (Amy Cudden) and her potential corruption cast a shadow over their fledgling romance.
That shadow gained solid form, though, when an absolutely not dead Becky turned up with tales of gangsters, faked-deaths and forced hidings. It soon became incredibly clear that not only was Becky corrupt, she was also absolutely insane, and she launched a campaign to reclaim her family.
Said campaign included firebombs, fake death threats and subtle manipulations that drove a big fat wedge into Swarla’s bond.
Oh, and not forgetting that Becky also kidnapped Carla and locking her in a cupboard, before leaving her to die in a shipping container. Nope. Can’t leave that bit out.
Becky was eventually unmasked as a total fruit loop and grade A cow, with the nation letting out an audible cheer when Lisa slapped a pair of handcuffs on her and sent her off to the slammer.
Carla, quite understandably, wasn’t initially keen on a reunion. I mean, she had just been kidnapped, left without her anti-rejection medication for her kidney and almost died in a grimy old metal container, after months of her pleading with Lisa to see what a wrong’un her ex-wife truly was.
Lisa was undeterred, though, and set about trying to fix their broken relationship. The wise words of Roy Cropper (David Neilson) and the memory of his eternal bond with his late wife, Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh) helped mend things, and Swarla finally reunited, ready to live the rest of their lives trouble and drama free…
Then a baby turned up.
Connie, the daughter of Carla’s murderer-brother, Rob Donovan (Marc Baylis) and prison guard Mandy Waring (Rebecca Atkinson) was left on the Connor-Swain’s doorstep.
Adding to the stress of them both working full time and trying to plan a wedding, the arrival of an incredibly needy new born baby hardly created a blissful atmosphere, and there was some friction when Lisa initially rejected Carla’s idea of a grand ceremony. She later came around, though.

Next week sees the two receive some incredibly exciting news.
Lisa receives word that her divorce from Becky has come through, and Carla decides a trip to the café is in order to celebrate them being rid of bent-Becks for good. Luckily, Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown) is on hand to watch Connie. Good old trustworthy Jodie.
Yeah, it seems like it’s one weirdo out, another weirdo in at the Connor-Swain gaff.
With the wedding set to be interrupted by Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) discovering a corpse, could their new babysitter be involved? And, more importantly…
…will Swarla ever catch a break?!
