It finally looks like the Yankees are coming out of their extended slump. They wrapped up a big series win on Sunday, taking the rubber match against the Blue Jays to move within two games of first place in the AL East. Their pitching and defense dragged them to the winning moment. But beyond, there’s another big factor involved!
Well, Toronto starter Max Scherzer was tipping his pitches. The Yankees picked up on him giving away his changeup, and runners on second base even started signaling to the batter by raising their arms. Guess what, that paid off quickly in the first inning when Ben Rice launched a three-run homer. Eventually, the Yankees held on for a 4-3 win to secure the series. And after the game, Cody Bellinger talked about Scherzer’s pitch-tipping. “That is correct. That’s what was happening,” Bellinger said. “We talk about it pregame, and you just go out there and look for it. If you see it, then you obviously do what you can.”
Well, the story first started with Aaron Judge. He made an impact with both his bat and his instincts on Sunday. Thus, helping the Yankees before he even flashed the leather. From second base, Judge picked up on Scherzer tipping his pitches and signaled it to Ben Rice just before the rookie launched a three-run homer in the first inning of New York’s 4-3 win over the Blue Jays.
During Ben Rice's home run at-bat, Cody Bellinger initiated the pitch tipping signals on Max Scherzer's changeup from first base (look closely at the video below). He relayed them to Aaron Judge, who relayed them to Rice.

Notably, Judge spread his arms to alert Rice of back-to-back changeups after getting the heads-up from Cody Bellinger at first. Rice battled through the at-bat, fouling off a full-count pitch before finally drilling a fastball on the 10th pitch to give the Yankees an early 3-0 lead. On the other hand, Scherzer, who only lasted 4 1/3 innings, admitted afterward that hitters have been able to pick up his changeup from first base.
Reportedly, against Rice, he threw three changeups. Judge stayed quiet on the first, but by the sixth pitch of the at-bat, he spread his arms to help Rice work the count full before the homer came.
The Yankees are surging just at the right time
In the last 10 games, the Yankees are 7-3. That’s quite better compared to their 28-25 record in July and August. And what’s more convincing is their last two series wins are against the Astros and Blue Jays, both division toppers. And before that? A few basement dwellers got pounded by the Bombers. So, the Yankees’ surge in performance couldn’t come at a better time.
And what made the weekend even better for the Yankees was Saturday’s win, when their pitching staff really set the tone. For instance, Luis Gil turned in another strong outing. He gave up just a couple of hits over six innings and got a big defensive boost from Cody Bellinger to keep the damage minimal. The bullpen handled the final three frames with little trouble to lock things down.
On the offensive side, the lineup is getting closer to full strength, too. For the unversed, Austin Slater came off the injured list Friday. That left Oswaldo Cabrera as the only position player still sidelined on the 40-man roster.
Hence, after some extended bumps along the way, the Yankees look like they’re starting to hit their stride at just the right time. Now it’s about seeing if this momentum can carry them deep into October.
