When one thinks of cinema-defining prison dramas, the first title that most often comes to mind is The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont's moving adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. The Shawshank Redemption is simply one of the most celebrated films ever made, but there are plenty more prison dramas worthy of recognition. This includes another Darabont adaptation of a King novel, The Green Mile, the French drama A Prophet, Steve McQueen's directorial debut Hunger, and many more.
