A classic ABC sitcom is getting reimagined at Fox, with the plan being to bring back one of the most iconic TV shows of all time.
What classic TV show is being reimagined?
According to a new report from Deadline, Fox is looking to bring back Bewitched, the legendary fantasy sitcom that first premiered in the 1960s. The series is an “hourlong reimagining” of the original and will come from writer and executive producer Judalina Neira (The Boys, Daisy Jones and the Six).
Per Deadline’s report, the series is the first project that Neira took on via her production company, Famous Last Words Production, when she signed an overall deal with Sony TV in 2024. The project eventually found its way to Fox and will be made in conjunction with both companies.
The new Bewitched reimagining is said to be “heartfelt” in tone, according to the report. “Though they come from two wildly different worlds — he’s a human, she’s a witch — for Samantha and Darrin, it’s love at first sight. But in order to be together, they’ll have to navigate their disapproving parents, walk a tightrope of cultural clashes, and bridge the divides between their families and worlds,” reads the logline for the new project.
The original Bewitched premiered in 1964 and ran for eight seasons, totaling over 250 episodes before ending in 1972. The series starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, a witch who marries a mortal man named Darrin Stephens (played by Dick York and later Dick Sargent), and their life together as the pair try to manage their chaotic married life.
The series is often cited as one of the greatest TV shows of all time. It made various crossovers with popular cartoons like The Flintstones, a spin-off project called Tabitha debuted in 1977, and a theatrical film starring Nicole Kidman was made in 2005.
