Christopher Nolan has been getting a lot of flowers for The Odyssey recently. Nolan’s big-budget all-IMAX blockbuster version of the original literary classic has grossed $1 billion in no time, it’s expected to sweep the Oscars, and it’s reinvigorated the discourse around Homer’s epic poem. While a handful of snobbish Homerists have dismissed it, Nolan’s movie did a great job of making an ancient text and its themes accessible to a much wider audience than the poem would’ve found on its own.
