The Odyssey stunt performer James Newman has opened up about Christopher Nolan‘s highly anticipated epic drama, teasing what the audience can expect from the star-studded project. Set to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026, the film is based on Homer’s classic Greek poem of the same name.

What was stuntman James Newman’s The Odyssey update?

In a now-deleted episode of the Action for Everyone podcast titled “The Odyssey of a Stuntman with James Newman,” Newman teased the unbelievable locations that will be featured in Nolan’s The Odyssey movie. He revealed that the award-winning filmmaker insisted on using never-before-filmed locations around Europe in order to deliver an epic depiction of the titular hero’s decade-long journey.

“They’re never going to make a movie like this again. I think it’s going to be an epic of all epics. It’s going to be Nolan at his best. No holds barred. He definitely fights a battle that a lot of people aren’t fighting. The coordinator came to us with scout pictures of locations, and it’s just all over Europe because Odysseus’ journey is crazy, it’s like 10 years long,” Newman shared.

“They found locations, and Nolan would go like, ‘Okay, this cave, has anyone ever filmed here before?’ And the local guy is like, ‘No.’ [Nolan] is like, ‘Okay, great, we’re going to film here.’ This untouched place. He wants to be the first person there to do it. He wants to feel like no one has ever touched ground here. And every location is a hike. There’s a castle, I think it’s Odysseus’ home, but it’s up on a hill and it’s like a two-kilometer hike to get up there.”

The movie will be led by Matt Damon, who has signed on for the leading role of Greek hero Odysseus. In the original story, the character was also introduced as the “king of Ithaca, who heads back home after the Trojan War. Presumed dead, Odysseus’ wife Penelope and son Telemachus contend with various suitors who compete for Penelope’s hand in Odysseus’ absence.” The star-studded ensemble cast also includes Robert PattinsonTom HollandAnne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, Will Yun Lee, and more.

Described as a mythic action epic, the film will be written and directed by Nolan, based on the Greek poet Homer’s classic story of the same name. This project marks the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s latest collaboration with Universal Pictures following the commercial and critical success of Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer biopic. The film will be produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas.
