Director Kathryn Bigelow’s work in the last couple of decades has a complicated reputation. The two most prominent of her four films since the mid-2000s have been called propaganda, particularly outside the United States. Nevertheless, there’s no denying that both movies received immense acclaim upon release, with the first — The Hurt Locker — winning the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars in 2010.
