Chris Kamara has opened up about the health problems he is facing amid his speech apraxia battle.

TV presenter Chris, 67, revealed in 2022 that he has apraxia, a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult to speak. It also affects the ex-footballer’s mobility.

Following the diagnosis, the former professional footballer and manager turned pundit was forced to quit his Sky Sports gig. Since then, he’s been open about living with the disorder.

Now, Chris has issued an update and has revealed he is currently facing a double “scary” health ordeal.

Chris Kamara on speech apraxia battle

In a new interview, Chris opened up about living with speech apraxia, admitting that it has completely changed his life.

Chris shared his apraxia diagnosis in 2022. The condition affects Chris’ speech daily, and he has previously revealed that on some days he slurs and on others he can’t speak at all.

And now, the father-of-two has shared that the most terrifying thing he is worried about amid his battle is “how quickly his health will deteriorate and the unknown.”

However, as well apraxia, Chris is also facing a double “scary” health ordeal.

Chris’ ‘scary’ health problems

“Alongside apraxia, and also thyroid problems which have come to light, I am also battling with dyspraxia which affects my co-ordination and balance,” he told The Sun.

Chris continued: “This can be quite scary, especially since some would say I used to be super fit.”

Revealing he’s unfortunately suffered falls, he explained: “The brain tells me that I am going to fall, and unfortunately I often do, but in certain situations I panic that this will happen when logically it won’t but I don’t have the confidence to ignore it – resulting in a few nervy minutes.”

Chris discusses ‘dark times’

The presenter has been open about life with apraxia. In his autobiography, Kammy, which was serialised in The The Mirror, Chris laid bare the “dark times” triggered by his illness.

He said: “I’m going to admit something now, something I’ve never mentioned before. It’s hard for me to talk about, so bear with me. As I was gripped by apraxia, and the apparent hopelessness of my future, I’d been escaping more and more down to the animals at the back of the house. Going down there allowed me to unravel my thoughts.”

Chris then heartbreakingly went on: “And I’ll be honest, some of those thoughts could be dark. I’m a man who has always wanted to help, to provide, to love and nurture those around me.

“And now I could only see myself as a burden. A shell of the man I used to be that they would be left to look after. Seeing myself like that was like staring into an abyss.”
