Channel 4 has officially renewed Brenda Blethyn’s popular drama series for a second season. The decision follows a strong debut for A Woman of Substance, the Barbara Taylor Bradford adaptation, which became the broadcaster’s most-streamed drama since It’s a Sin. The renewal will continue the story of Emma Harte following the conclusion of the show’s debut run.

The Golden Globe awardee is officially set to continue her portrayal of Emma Harte after Channel 4 renewed the series for a second season.

According to Deadline, Jessica Reynolds will also reprise her role as the younger version of the character. This will allow A Woman of Substance to continue exploring different stages of Emma’s life as her story moves into a new chapter.

The decision follows a strong response to the first season, which became Channel 4’s most-streamed drama since It’s a Sin. The series is adapted from Barbara Taylor Bradford’s eponymous bestselling novel from 1979.

Season 1 premiered on Channel 4 on March 11, 2026, and was met with a positive critical response. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently holds an 89 percent critics’ score based on nine reviews.

Season 2 of A Woman of Substance will continue exploring two distinct periods in Emma’s life. One storyline follows her ambitions in the years after the First World War as she establishes her place in the rapidly evolving society of the 1920s. At the same time, the later timeline sees Emma fighting to regain control of the business empire she spent years building after it falls into the hands of Jim Fairley.

Returning behind the scenes are writers Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley, with The Forge once again producing the drama. Richard Senior remains attached as director, while Banijay Rights will continue handling international distribution.

Additional information about the second season is expected to be announced at a later date.
