Jayson Tatum‘s season is officially over.

The Boston Celtics star underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon, the team announced.

He suffered the injury in Boston’s Game 4 loss to the New York Knicks on Monday night.

There is currently no timetable for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Tatum suffered the injury with just three minutes left in what ended up as a 121-113 loss for the Celtics. Upon a Boston turnover, the six-time all-star lunged for the loose ball and immediately fell to the ground as his leg gave out. He buried his face in a towel in obvious pain while grabbing at his leg above the ankle after the non-contact injury.

And when he couldn’t get to his feet late in the pivotal contest of the Eastern Conference semifinals and had to be carried off the court, it was clear just how serious his lower right leg injury was.

“He’s the type of guy, he gets right up,” Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla said. “So he didn’t and … yeah, I mean it’s tough to watch a guy like him get carried like that.”

“I think tonight is tough,” Tatum’s running mate Jaylen Brown added. “I think everybody’s kind of at a loss for words, just because, one losing the game, but obviously the concern with JT. But we pick our heads back up tomorrow and go from there.”

Tatum scored 42 points, his high in these playoffs, before he was hurt. He was eventually pushed down a tunnel in a wheelchair after leaving the floor.

Through 72 regular-season appearances, the 27-year-old posted averages of 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists. In the playoffs, he’s put up 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists in eight games.

And now, not only is his title-defence campaign over, the injury will likely cause him to miss a chunk of the 2025-26 season. The fewest games he’s played in a single regular season to this point was 64 in 2020-21.

All the while, the Celtics will have to overcome a 3-1 series deficit without the star forward as action between them and the Knicks resumes in Boston on Wednesday.
