After a horrific end to the season, the Boston Celtics have gone back to planning. In hindsight, this might be one of the most important offseasons for the Celtics in regards to their future. The new ownership isn’t willing to pay half a billion to keep the squad together, and Jayson Tatum is out for the year. So there are two things on their agenda. The Celtics need to get below the second round and construct a competitive roster.
Until now, Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday were looked at as trade components to achieve the same. However, can the Celtics manage to cook up something better by sacrificing one of their core players? John Zannis had a wild proposition. He feels Brown could be a beacon to achieve both of their aims. But there are a few things he wants the Celtics to keep in mind.
“You trade Jaylen Brown if somebody values him like a top 10 player, and you get a Bridges or a Harden sort of deal. And you can you get a crap ton of picks in younger players because somebody wants their star,” he said on the Garden Report.
Zannis doesn’t treat a possible Brown trade to cut the Celtics’ lofty payroll. In his eyes, they should only consider parting ways with the Finals MVP if they see an opportunity to make the full out of Jayson Tatum’s prime. He sees one major target that could make that possible.
“You absolutely listen on Brown if some team is willing to overwhelm you for it… If Houston offered Amen Thompson and any amount of picks, you make that trade quickly. Hang up the phone. Don’t tell anybody. Pull the Lakers Nico thing and immediately say yes,” Mannix added.

The only downside is that Mannix doesn’t perceive the Rockets giving up the fast-rising forward in exchange for the star they need. But on the same panel, Bob Manning has another team that could offer the Celtics a great foundation to build their team once Tatum recovers from his Achilles injury.
“San Antonio is a little more interesting because it’s, you know, number two pick in this draft. Talk about a reset… Devin Vassell, that’s a real wing with some upside there. That’s, you know, you know, maybe you get a Keldon Johnson, you have multiple wings coming back in that deal, and all of a sudden that’s a real reload right there,” he noted.
But is that worth the gamble?
Does trading Jaylen Brown really benefit the Celtics?
Jaylen Brown has been an outstanding player for the Boston Celtics. The explosive forward has represented the franchise in the right way. Moreover, in their title run, his defensive intensity played a pivotal role in them winning a record 18th title. In his years playing alongside Jayson Tatum, the tandem has flourished into being one of the best in the NBA.
A trade revolving around Brown would fetch great value. He is only 28 and loaded with an obsession to continue to keep getting better. The Celtics could lure some tantalizing offers by putting him on the market. However, as the Celtics will lack Tatum’s services next season, they need a cornerstone.
Brown and Tatum aren’t separated by much. If given the opportunity to take over the keys, Jaylen Brown could be the ideal candidate to replace JT. He has been in the system since a rookie and portrays all the qualities the Celtics need. Furthermore, with Derrick White likely to remain a Celtic, the franchise has a great tandem to build around.
Just because Jayson Tatum will miss one season doesn’t mean the Celtics need to dismantle their core. A trade for Brown would set them back several years before they can contend for a title. And although still young, there’s no assurance that Tatum will resume at the same level he left the game.
Taking into mind such scenarios, trading Brown should be the last thing on their minds. He is an essential player with proven championship intangibles. Replacing a ideal system player in order to start fresh may waste a few years off Tatum’s career rather than help the Celtics boost their chances of competing again.
If Jaylen Brown is unable to handle the responsibility of being the franchise mainstay, the Celtics can entertain a possible trade. But without giving him a chance, there is far more to loss for them.
