Tom Cruise’s filmography includes plenty of huge hits, but one of his most acclaimed dramas is about to disappear from Netflix. The movie is a well-liked Vietnam War drama, with strong audience and critic scores nearly four decades after its theatrical debut.

As per What’s on Netflix, The Oliver Stone-directed Born on the Fourth of July will be leaving Netflix on Oct. 1, 2026. Stone co-wrote the screenplay with Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic, whose autobiography inspired the story. A. Kitman Ho produced the film, while Universal Pictures and Ixtlan handled its production.

Cruise portrays Kovic as an idealistic young man who enlists in the Marines with a strong sense of duty. Vietnam shatters that belief. After suffering paralysis in combat, he returns to America and faces a harsh reality as a neglected veteran. His journey eventually takes him from wounded soldier to vocal opponent of the war.

The movie opened in theaters on Dec. 20, 1989, and turned its reported $14 million budget into roughly $161 million worldwide. Around $70 million came from the U.S. and Canada, giving the R-rated drama a strong commercial run despite tackling the difficult subject of war and its aftermath. Its 145-minute runtime also made its box-office performance notable, proving audiences were willing to spend more than two hours with the film’s heavy story

Cruise was surrounded by a strong ensemble that included Willem Dafoe, Kyra Sedgwick, Raymond J. Barry, Jerry Levine and Frank Whaley. His work stood out as one of the film’s major highlights, while Oliver Stone took home the Academy Award for Best Director.

Decades after its release, the film continues to draw solid scores from viewers and critics. Rotten Tomatoes records an 84% Tomatometer rating based on multiple reviews, while its audience score sits at 76%. On IMDb, the movie has a 7.2/10 average from roughly 126,000 users.
