A power outage hit the Canary Islands only a week after Spain’s nationwide blackout.

The lights went off across a third of the island of La Palma at around 10am.

At least 30,000 people across 20 towns were left without power for nearly two hours.

Affected areas included Los Llanos de Aridane, Breña Alta, Santa Cruz de La Palma and Fuencaliente.

La Palma council urged people to remain calm, avoid overwhelming emergency services and to preserve battery life on their mobile phones.

More than half of the power has been restored, the mayor of Los Llanos, Javier Llama, told La Radio Canaria at around midday.

The cause of the blackout is unclear.

Once power is restored, La Palma officials has urged people to ‘avoid turning on electronic devices at the same time to avoid overloading the power grid, as well as using the internet and calls responsibly to avoid disrupting communications’.
