A British couple have died after their £300,000 Ferrari careered off a mountain cliff and into a river.

The married couple were in a 20 car convoy of fellow Ferrari drivers with UK number plates when their supercar skidded off the road at 2pm on Saturday.

Rescuers found the pair, 78 and 58, and their vehicle in Yuso River in the town Boca de Huergano of northern Spain.

It took hours for authorities to reach the black Ferrari 488’s crushed shell, which had become partially submerged in the river.

The car, which can reach speeds of 205mph, had tumbled upside down on its roof before it was flipped over during the rescue attempt.

The incident took place during a rally for British Ferrari owners, who had arrived in the province of León just a day before the crash.

The couple had been on the N-621 road when they tumbled to their death.

The highway is known for its stunning scenery, but drivers are warned they need to navigate ‘sweeping bends’ and ‘twisty roads’.

It is unclear where the occupants drowned or died from their initial injuries.

Jose Antonio Gutierrez Sampedro said: ‘A Ferrari 488 with 700 horsepower needs to be handled carefully.

‘It seems the couple were 78 and 58 years old. Maybe the driver suffered a medical emergency. Such a sad way to lose your life.’
