A Britain’s Got Talent contestant who made history on Saturday has insisted that his impromptu audition was completely real.
Things got a little tense when singer Max Fox suddenly interrupted the final round of Britain’s Got Talent 2025 auditions, stepping out from he crowd.
Security instinctively stepped in when Simon Cowell was confronted by Max—but all was not as it seemed, with Max just wanting a chance to impress the music mogul.
Midway through the auditions, as the judges chatted amongst themselves, Max could be heard calling Simon’s name from further back in the theatre.
Simon turned around to look for Max when the amateur performer said:’19 years I’ve been trying to get in front of you, and I’ve never, ever had that chance.’

He continued, asking the music and TV mogul, ‘Can you give me one opportunity?’ before insisting he could show the nation ‘what [he’s got]’.

After being asked if this was a wind-up, Max got on the stage and did an impressive rendition of Frank Sinatra’s My Way, receiving a standing ovation and a Golden Buzzer from Amanda.
On Monday morning, Max appeared on This Morning to hit back at claims that the audition might have been organised before recording took place.
‘The day before, I got some free tickets for the auditions – three rows back from the panel. It was just in the moment – there was some old dears behind me and I asked them if I should ask Simon if I can sing.’

Max was then quizzed by Josie Gibson, who asked him to be honest and let the viewers know if his impromptu performance was a set-up.
He responded: ‘It wasn’t a set-up. There’s no way of me being able to physically prove it, but I get [the accusations]. There are so many reality shows where storylines are set up, but this wasn’t one and that’s all I can say.’
On social media, @HarveyLHLeo had speculated: ‘Fix again BGT. 19 years waiting, all those years auditions, yet never got to perform. What a load of tosh.’
@Level54NotOut commented: ‘My guess is it’s been set up. However he was brilliant and deserves the Golden Buzzer. Of course it was a set-up but his vocals don’t lie. Really good vocalist.’

@RockyApolloIV dismissed it: ‘Contrived nonsense. Anyone who thinks this was completely spontaneous and genuine, then I’ve got a time machine and a briefcase of £27 notes for you to buy.’
Presenter Andi Peters backed up Max’s version of events, saying he received a text from a friend who works behind the scenes on Britain’s Got Talent.
The text read, ‘No, it wasn’t a set-up. Thank god he was good because we had to wait around an extra hour,’ with Max joking that the production team just wanted to get home.
Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and guest judge KSI were all stunned by the twist in the format when Max got up, as KSI remarked: ‘I’ve never seen this before.’
Several other audience members then rose to their feet for a glimpse of the action, as Max told the panel: ‘I feel like it’s my last time.’
Seemingly welcoming the shake-up, Simon shrugged and said: ‘Alright, go do it.’
‘So, this isn’t a set-up?’, he asked one more time, just to be sure. ‘You just chanced it?’
‘I just chanced it, yeah,’ Max told him. ‘I got to the front of the audience. I just got lucky with this jacket, I think.’

He then made his way backstage with producers to get things set up, the thousands-strong crowd cheering him on for his impromptu audition.
As the episode came to a close, Max returned and belted out an epic rendition of My Way by Frank Sinatra, but not before explaining why the moment meant so much to him.
‘I’ve been trying 19 years, since I was 16, to get in front of you (Simon). I’ve been in Manchester in the football stadiums where you’ve held your big auditions, and I’ve never been able to.
‘Luckily, I was 10 feet away from you. I don’t know how I managed to get that seat, and I just thought it’s worth a chance to ask you.’
The full-time singer said performing was his ‘passion’, swearing to Simon that the moment was genuine, dispelling viewers’ suspicions at home that the whole thing was ‘staged’.
‘This is my dream, singing in front of you,’ he said, to which Simon joked, ‘I hope you’re good.’
This sent Max sailing through to the live shows in an incredible moment that viewers reckon showcased the very best of BGT.
Britain’s Got Talent continues on Saturday on ITV1 and ITVX.
