The world of Breaking Bad is clearly a violent one, but the death of Gustavo “Gus” Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) is still perhaps the most shocking one to witness in real time. The episode title “Face Off” deserves its name in more ways than one, bringing two rivalries to their natural conclusion and killing Gus in a gruesome manner. For someone who seemed unlikable, the attack is both a desperate and brilliant move by Walter White (Bryan Cranston) in his bid to conquer the local drug trade, and tension hangs in the air throughout the entire scene. When it finally explodes, literally and figuratively, the results are shocking, gruesome, and satisfying.
