“Boxing’s a Joke”- Team Conor McGregor Attacks 100 Year Old Sport After Ryan Garcia’s Upset

Headlining the ‘Fatal Fury: City of Wolves’ card on Friday night, Ryan Garcia made his long-awaited return to the ring after a year-long layoff due to struggles with substance abuse. What was meant to be a triumphant comeback quickly spiraled into a disaster. Instead of building momentum for a blockbuster rematch with Devin Haney, the night turned into a nightmare. Rolando “Rolly” Romero flipped the script and delivered the biggest upset of the year, stunning fans and silencing Garcia’s hype train. Amid the chaos, Team Conor McGregor stepped in—not just to call out individual boxers but also challenge the entire sport.

Romero was the massive underdog going into the fight, but he was much more confident and looked better than Garcia, who was banned from embracing the ring for a year due to Ostarine abuse. Romero scored an early takedown in the second round, rocking Garcia, and from there, he maintained his momentum and controlled the entire match. At the end of the fight, ‘Rolly’ was the clear winner as the judges scored the card 115-112, 115-112, and 118-109 in his favor.

After the fight, Ryan Garcia stood up as he applauded the sportsmanship of Romero and said, “He fought a good fight, caught me early. No excuses. Congratulations to him, he fought a good fight, and that’s that. …I just think that whole year took a lot off my body physically and mentally. I’m just happy I made it to the ring and went 12 rounds.”

This was a humbling experience for Ryan Garcia; however, for Team Conor McGregor, the defeat served as an opportunity to call out the entire sport of boxing. The ever-controversial Dillon Danis took to his X handle to call out boxers for their lack of fighting spirit, “Boxing’s a joke when Merab Dvalishvili could run through all 6 guys in the main event back-to-back, no rest, and finish them all in under 30 minutes.” 

And this isn’t the first time Dillon Danis has criticized the sweet science. Back when he was preparing to fight Logan Paul in a boxing match, Danis also took aim at boxing. He claimed that many boxers cherry-pick their opponents and specifically targeted Jake Paul. Danis competed under the boxing rules against Logan Paul, but he was defeated by him in a humiliating fashion. Recently, he was expected to fight against KSI in a boxing match, but the YouTuber-Turner-Boxer pulled out, leaving him hanging.

“Being real, I’m frustrated as hell. I wanted to stay as active as possible for myself and for everyone who supports me in 2025. First KSI canceled on me, then said he wouldn’t be fit to reschedule. We couldn’t lock in a replacement. I said yes to everyone,” wrote Danis after KSI pulled out due to an illness. Dillon Danis’ rage is expected, but now Ryan Garcia’s future might be grim, considering the fact that his rematch with Haney could be in limbo—or is it?

Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney is arguably one of the most controversial rivalries in recent boxing history. Garcia missed weight by over three pounds on fight day, making him ineligible to win Haney’s WBC super lightweight title. Despite the weight issue, Garcia fought Haney and dropped him thrice in the battle, winning the fight by way of majority decision. Haney’s zero was taken, but the controversy was just starting. After the fight, Garcia was flagged for a banned substance, Ostarine. The athletic commission took harsh measures for this, as his victory was overturned, and he was banned from fighting for a year.

As he returned to the ring, Garcia’s victory would have meant a rematch against Haney. However, with his defeat, things have changed. Devin Haney fought Jose Ramirez under the same card and won the fight, but since Garcia has conceded defeat, their rematch stands in limbo for now. Interestingly, Romero wants to witness a fight between these hotshots.

After defeating Ryan Garcia, Romero stated, “I ain’t even thinking about what’s next. I think Devin and Ryan should get their rematch and make a big one.” Romero remained gracious in victory and, despite potentially delaying the Garcia-Haney rematch, he expressed genuine interest in seeing them settle the score again in the future.
