The closer to the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch, the closer we are to standardizing $80 video games. Mario Kart World will be among the first big releases to have the high price tag, with Microsoft possibly following suit later this year as the company announced price hikes for games coming this holiday season. As we move towards this possible new normal, Borderlands 4 boss Randy Pitchford weighed in on the price hike by saying a “real fan” would “find a way” to pay $80 for a video game.
Borderlands 4’s Randy Pitchford weighs in on $80 video games
In a recent post on X, Pitchford quote tweeted Nintendo of America’s post regarding Borderlands 4’s release on the Nintendo Switch 2. A fan replied to Pitchford about the game’s pricing. Specifically, telling him that Gearbox shouldn’t price the game at $80.
“Randy, this game better not be 80 dollars,” remarked a fan to Pitchford’s original post. “Don’t take that risk, a lot of gamers aren’t gonna pay 80 dollars and feed this notion of constant increase of the price tag.”
In Pitchford’s response to the fan, he first says that the pricing is “not his call.” He then says that “a real fan” will “find a way” to pay $80 for a game they want, including Borderlands 4.
A) Not my call. B) If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.

Borderlands 4 is slated to release on PS5 on September 12. It can be added to players’ PS Store wish lists right now. Players interested in the game can learn more from the State of Play for the game.
