DUNEDIN, Fla. – Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer won’t make his scheduled spring training start on Thursday due to a sore thumb, according to manager John Schneider.
“It’s just kind of sore after his last outing,” Schneider said. “So, we’re just going be extra careful with him and go from there.”
Scherzer last pitched on Saturday when he allowed just one hit over 3.1 scoreless frames against the Detroit Tigers. The 40-year-old struck out six and issued no walks while tossing 49 pitches in the outing. Over seven frames this spring, the right-hander has allowed just two hits and compiled 10 strikeouts.
Scherzer was limited to just nine starts with the Texas Rangers in 2024 due to a nerve issue that ran from his thumb all the way to his triceps.

Left-hander Easton Lucas will start in Scherzer’s place on Thursday when the Baltimore Orioles visit the Blue Jays at TD Ballpark in Dunedin. Schneider said the Blue Jays hope to know more about Scherzer’s status in the next few days.
“Being careful with the old 40-year-old,” said the manager.
Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5-million deal with the Blue Jays in February. The future Hall of Famer has collected three Cy Young awards and eight all-star appearances over his 17-year career.
