The Toronto Blue Jays will have to operate without one of their top bullpen arms.

Toronto placed reliever Yimi García on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement, the team announced Saturday. Manager John Schneider told reporters Saturday that the issue has slowly developed over the last few weeks.

Schneider also said that Garcia will fly back to Toronto to see a doctor before a timeline is determined.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays will recall right-hander Paxton Schultz from triple-A Buffalo.

García has posted a 3.15 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 20.0 innings for Toronto this season. After returning to the organization this past off-season following last summer’s trade to the Seattle Mariners, the six-foot-one righty picked up right where he left off as a leverage option for the Blue Jays.

After allowing seven runs in back-to-back outings in early May, García has since delivered five straight scoreless appearances.

García last pitched on Thursday against the San Diego Padres.

Schultz will return to the Blue Jays after making his MLB debut earlier this season. The 27-year-old has an uneven experience in his first time with the big-league club.

In his first outing, Schultz tied the MLB record for strikeouts by a reliever in their debut, punching out eight Seattle Mariners. His next time out, however, he allowed three runs over 2.1 innings against the New York Yankees.

Since returning to triple-A, Schultz has allowed six runs over 12.0 innings while collecting 13 strikeouts.
