The numbers told an amazing story: 30 postseason hits, a new MLB record that blew everyone’s mind and changed the history books. A $3.5 million infielder went from being a journeyman who had been cut by several teams to the heart of a World Series run, hitting close to .400 when it mattered most. But when the American League Gold Glove Awards were announced, that same Blue Jays player was not on the list.

Ernie Clement not being named one of the 2025 AL Gold Glove winners caused an immediate backlash in Blue Jays Nation.

Kansas City’s Maikel Garcia won the award for best third baseman, leading all AL third basemen with +17 Outs Above Average and +13 Defensive Runs Saved. Clement was a finalist with José Ramírez from Cleveland, but his defensive stats weren’t as good as Garcia’s great season. Yet, the snub hurt even more because Clement had a great season and was a key part of Toronto’s late-season push.

Clement’s World Series almost ended with a walk-off hit on Saturday night at Rogers Centre, but Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages stole it from him in a collision play that made Clement chuckle at how cruel baseball can be.

The final result shows how complicated the Gold Glove selection process is.

MLB.com says that 75% of the vote comes from managers and coaches in the league, and the SABR Defensive Index makes up the other 25%. Garcia’s statistical dominance was too much to handle. His +17 OAA was tied for seventh among all AL position players, and his defensive runs saved were only behind Pittsburgh’s Ke’Bryan Hayes (21) across both leagues.

Clement’s ability to play a lot of different positions may have hurt him.

He played 89 games at third base, 60 at second base, 29 at shortstop, and 15 at first base. This might have made his defense less effective at any one position.

But even though he didn’t win the Gold Glove, his 30 hits in the postseason will go down in history. Garcia is the second Royals third baseman to win the award, after George Brett in 1985.

Blue Jays fans erupt over Ernie Clement Gold Glove snub

The reaction from Toronto Blue Jays faithful was swift and unforgiving. Social media erupted with disbelief as fans processed Clement’s Gold Glove exclusion despite his historic postseason performance.

“Where is Ernie Clement?” asked one angry fan, capturing the confusion of a fanbase that watched their infielder break playoff hitting records. The feeling was that 30 postseason hits and a batting average of almost .400 should have led to recognition beyond just offensive stats.

Another fan declared, “No Ernie Clement, what a joke,” pointing to his 89 appearances at third base, where he became a regular at the hot corner and anchored Toronto’s infield all season.

“Ernie Clement robbed,” read another sharp response, the word choice carrying more weight for fans who saw Pages steal his World Series walk-off moment just a few days earlier.

Another simply commented, “Just Terrible,” suggesting that Clement’s ability to play four different infield positions might have hurt his chances of getting the job instead of helping them.

“No, Ernie is a criminal,” was the last word from another unhappy voice. This reaction showed how unfair the snub felt to those who saw Clement go from being a nobody to a postseason legend in Toronto’s uniform.

Do you feel this was a fair call, though?
