Taylor Swift is making headlines after her legal team moved to dismiss the subpoena from Justin Baldoni. The subpoena stems from his ongoing legal feud with Blake Lively. In new court documents, Swift’s lawyers outlined why they want the request thrown out, citing her limited connection to It Ends With Us and addressing the broader legal fallout.
Here’s what the filings reveal about the subpoena, Swift’s response, and how she became entangled in the dispute.

According to court filings made on May 12, Taylor Swift’s attorneys at Venable called the subpoena “an abuse of the discovery process” and argued that Swift had no role in the film’s production or related claims (via Billboard.)
Venable, which was also subpoenaed alongside Swift on April 29, emphasized that “Venable had nothing to do with the film at issue or any of the claims or defenses asserted in the underlying lawsuit.” The firm’s motion also stated, “There is no reason for this subpoena other than to distract from the facts of the case and impose undue burden and expense on a non-party.”
On May 9, a representative for Swift told Us Weekly, “Taylor Swift never set foot on the set of this movie, she was not involved in any casting or creative decisions… She did not even see It Ends With Us until weeks after its public release.” The rep added that Swift was “traveling around the globe during 2023 and 2024 headlining the biggest tour in history.”
Baldoni’s subpoena requested all communications between Swift and Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and their legal team. Venable argued that Baldoni should obtain this information directly from Lively and Reynolds, not from Swift or her law firm.
In response, Lively’s lawyer Mike Gottlieb told People on May 8, “It’s not a case about how songs were chosen for the movie… You can’t just go around subpoenaing people because they’re famous.” Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, said in a statement that “the truth has been clearly shown through unedited receipts, documents and real life footage.”
