New Black Phone 2 trailer and poster for Ethan Hawke sequel revealed
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have released the first official trailer and poster for The Black Phone 2. The sequel was revealed at CCXP in Mexico City and marks the return of director Scott Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on October 17, 2025.
Ethan Hawke reprises his role as The Grabber, a ghostly antagonist who now haunts Finn’s younger sister, Gwen, played by Madeleine McGraw. Mason Thames returns as Finn, alongside Jeremy Davies as their father, and Miguel Mora. The cast also includes Oscar nominee Demián Bichir as a camp supervisor, Arianna Rivas as his niece, Maev Beaty, and Graham Abbey.
Derrickson and Cargill wrote Black Phone 2, based on characters created by Joe Hill. Jason Blum, Derrickson, and Cargill produced the film, while Adam Hendricks and Ryan Turek served as executive producers. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse present the film in association with Crooked Highway.
The original Black Phone earned $161 million globally against an estimated $18 million budget and was based on Joe Hill’s short story. The sequel picks up with the return of The Grabber, who contacts Finn through the haunted rotary phone and declares, “You of all people should know that dead is just a word.”
According to Derrickson, the new film features a tonal shift, moving from a middle-school to high-school setting and incorporates a winter camp backdrop inspired by his own teenage experiences. “It is certainly more violent, scarier, more graphic… and part of that is because of the age of the kids,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter). The trailer confirms a supernatural return for The Grabber and introduces heightened horror elements.
