Netflix‘s highly anticipated BioShock movie has finally received a major update regarding its potential story. The project has been in development since 2022, with The Hunger Games franchise director Francis Lawrence attached to helm the live-action adaptation of the hit video game series.
What game will the BioShock movie be based on?
During a recent interview with The Direct, producer Roy Lee revealed some exciting details about the BioShock movie’s current status and plot. He confirmed that it will be Lawrence’s next project after directing Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is currently filming in Spain. He also admitted that the script is still being “worked on” while they wait for Lawrence to wrap up the newest Hunger Games prequel.
“Well, The Long Walk became a reality because BioShock was delayed for a little bit, where we had to do some more script work,” Lee said. “And so as the script work is being done, we shot The Long Walk, and he was already committed to doing the next Hunger Games movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the Hunger Games is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.”
In addition, when asked about the movie’s potential story, Lee shared that the Netflix adaptation will definitely be based on the first installment of the BioShock video game series, which first launched in 2007.
“Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps,” he revealed. “But it’s definitely going to be based on the first BioShock game.”
The original game takes place in a fictional underwater city of Rapture in 1960, where the protagonist Jack enters to search for answers. There, Jack encounters mutated humans in diving suits, as well as young girls who were genetically engineered. Due to its success, the first BioShock game was followed by two more sequels, 2010’s BioShock 2 and 2013’s BioShock Infinite.
When the film adaptation was first announced by Netflix, Logan and Blade Runner 2049 screenwriter Michael Green was initially attached to pen the screenplay. Last May 2025, it was revealed that Terminator: Dark Fate’s Justin Rhodes had boarded the project to write a new draft of the screenplay.
