Sony confirmed earlier this year that it’s working on a major PS5 Pro system update that PlayStation architect Mark Cerny dubbed “the next evolution of PSSR.” The company gave a general release date window of 2026, and now a known leaker has claimed that we won’t have to wait too long.
PS5 Pro update will improve PSSR, add AMD FSR 4 support
According to YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), who has proven to be reliable with his PS5 and PS6 tech leaks, the aforementioned update will be out during the first quarter of 2026. Considering we’re well into September 2025, this is pretty good news.
“Our focus for 2025 is working with developers to integrate PSSR into their titles; in parallel, though, we have already started to implement the new neural network on PS5 Pro,” Cerny told Digital Foundry back in March. “Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR.”
There have been reports that games will need to be patched to take advantage of the incoming update because Sony’s current upscaler isn’t set up to allow system-level DLL swaps.
If the rumor of a Q1 2026 release window is true, we expect to hear more about the next PS5 Pro update soon.
