The Toronto Blue Jays will get their first look at Shane Bieber on a normal turn through the rotation when they travel to take on the Cincinnati Reds.
Manager John Schneider announced that Bieber will pitch in the finale of the Blue Jays’ three-game set against the Reds on Wednesday, on normal rest.
Bieber, who joined the Blue Jays at the trade deadline, has been carefully managed in his return from injury, with extra rest built into each of his first few outings.
The right-hander has shown flashes of his former dominance since arriving, giving the Blue Jays a stabilizing presence alongside Chris Bassitt, Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer and Jose Berríos. Eric Lauer had also been pitching as part of the six-man rotation following Bieber’s addition at the trade deadline.
Bieber owns a 1–1 record with a 2.38 ERA, striking out 15 and walking none across 11.1 innings since joining Toronto. His most recent outing came against Milwaukee on Friday, where he went 5.1 innings with six strikeouts in a 7-2 loss.
Toronto opens the series Monday with Bassitt opposing Reds flamethrower Hunter Greene. Berrios will square off with left-hander Nick Lodolo on Tuesday before Bieber takes the ball in the finale.
The Reds sit five games back of the final wild-card spot in the National League, while the Blue Jays are looking to maintain top spot in the AL East.
