Xbox believes one of its biggest gaming franchises now rivals the world’s largest entertainment brands. A senior executive recently argued that the long-running shooter series has grown beyond the MCU in scale. The comments came as Microsoft celebrated Xbox’s 25th anniversary and discussed the future of its game franchises across film and television.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma thinks Call of Duty is ‘bigger’ than MCU

During a discussion about Xbox’s expanding entertainment ambitions, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma pointed to the success of several gaming properties and made a bold comparison involving Call of Duty.

She noted that games have become a major part of modern culture and argued that some franchises now operate on a scale comparable to or even larger than traditional Hollywood brands.

Sharma said to EW, “Great games are culture, and culture is entertainment,” before talking about the success of adaptations such as Fallout and Minecraft. She then added that “Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” As per Sharma, the franchise’s reach extends far beyond gaming audiences.

The statement backs the enormous commercial success of Call of Duty. Since debuting in 2003, the series has grown into one of the highest-selling entertainment franchises ever. The franchise has released more than 20 mainline entries, along with major spin-offs and the hugely successful Warzone battle royale title.

Among fan favorites, titles such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Black Ops, Black Ops II, and Warzone are often regarded as the strongest entries. However, not every release landed the same way. Games like Ghosts, Infinite Warfare, and Vanguard had a more mixed reception and are considered a let-down by longtime fans.

Microsoft isn’t slowing down its Hollywood ambitions anytime soon. The company reportedly has a packed slate of game-to-screen projects in the pipeline, even if it’s keeping most of them under wraps for now. In addition, one shouldn’t count Halo out just because the Paramount+ show wrapped after two seasons. Xbox still sees plenty of value in the franchise.
