We've gotten so used to seeing Peter Jackson as a visual rehabilitator or a Middle Earth shepherd that his time as an exploitation wunderkind seems like a hazy dream. You watch Bad Tasteor Brain Dead and marvel that the same sick and twisted mind that could imagine such depravity is the same that could make something as wholesome as the bond between Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Samwise (Sean Astin). For some, that transition seemed like an overnight flip, but there was a clear demarcation where he started growing his visual effects muscles, and that was his first proper Hollywood film, 1996's The Frighteners. Despite being a financial and critical disappointment, it's since been reclaimed as an important stepping stone in Jackson's evolution as a filmmaker, but even that claim doesn't diminish what a spooky fun bumper car ride it is.
