The pressure put on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was tremendous, based on just how well-received the previous three installments in the franchise had been. The new trilogy, which began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, featured Andy Serkis’ transformative performance as the ape leader Caesar, which has often been referred to as the greatest achievement ever in motion capture acting. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apesmoved the series forward to a generation after Caesar’s death, in which the apes had achieved dominance over the planet for the first time. Caesar’s legacy was an important component of the narrative, but it was Owen Teague who took over the protagonist role with his performance as the young ape Noa.
